When I was eight months into my real estate career, I felt like I was finally finding my footing. I had just closed my first sale, and the excitement of helping someone find their dream home was still fresh. Little did I know, my next challenge would take me far outside my comfort zone—and teach me lessons I’d carry with me for the rest of my career.

It all started with a simple message. A friend of a Facebook friend, Patty Ray, reached out to ask if I knew anyone who could help her find a home in the Florida Keys. Now, let me be clear: the Keys were over three hours away from where I was based. I had no experience in that market, and I was still very much a rookie in the industry. But something inside me said, “Why not? Let’s give it a shot.”

Patty assured me she wasn’t wasting my time, so I dove headfirst into learning everything I could about the area. I studied the market, connected with local agents, and familiarized myself with the unique charm of the Keys. When Patty narrowed down the homes she wanted to see, I knew I had to be there in person to guide her.

There was just one problem: I was broke. Early in my career, funds were tight, and a hotel stay in the Keys wasn’t exactly in my budget. So, I got creative. I booked a campsite on Fiesta Key and dug out an old tent I’d gotten years ago with credit card reward points. (Yes, a tent. 😂)

I hadn’t used the tent since I’d acquired it, and honestly, I had no idea how to set it up. But I figured, “How hard could it be? I was a Boy Scout once!” Turns out, very hard. The wind was relentless, and after three hours of struggling, I was ready to give up. That’s when a kind Canadian couple, who had been watching my battle with the tent, came over and offered to help. Together, we finally got it up, and I spent two nights under the stars, dreaming of Patty finding her perfect home.

The next day, I met Patty and showed her the properties she had her eye on. It was a whirlwind of excitement, hope, and a little bit of nerves. And then, it happened—Patty found the one. Her dream home in the Keys. The moment she signed the papers, I knew every ounce of effort had been worth it.

That tent (pictured below) is more than just a piece of gear to me. It’s a symbol of where I started, the lengths I’ll go for my clients, and the unexpected kindness of strangers along the way. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most memorable journeys begin with a leap of faith—and maybe a little help from a couple of friendly Canadians.

This experience taught me that real estate isn’t just about transactions; it’s about relationships, perseverance, and going the extra mile (or three hours and a tent setup) to make someone’s dream come true.
